Thanks to all - Sarumite, you are spot on. I had kitchen for 6d!
I am sorry but I think you are all wrong with strata. The Oxford Dictionary makes it pretty clear that the plural of stratus (continuous horizontal sheet of cloud) is STRATI.
or Stratum .. plural strata .. a layer of any material or atmosphere.

I've posted mine with strata - but I fear that Town Crier is probably right. The clue says "way one trapped deserter using horizontal sheets". Damn!
Aquagility "one" can equally mean "A" in crossword clues.
You're right as ever, S. Done now, anyway, and I'm not sending in another. There are those who would. I know one man who sends in a Herculis entry in the name of each of his eight grandchildren!
