A friend and I are travelling south through vietnam from Hanoi and would like to travel from Hoi An to Cambodia - skipping the southern part of Vietnam. Is it possible to cross the border in the North East of Cambodia? I notice that there is a marked road on the map of indochina between Pleiku (in Vietnam) and Stung Treng (In Cambodia).

I assume you will be heading for Siem Reap ?.Are you going via Laos ?.if so there is a border crossing there. Best thing to do is go to the web site for LONELY PLANET, plenty of info there,
ivo-24, if on your travels you are in phnom penh, can you ask about Eric the beggar ( yabba taking crazed american) dresses like a monk,i got told the police didnt mind him directing traffick on sisowath quay, but took exception when he did it with no clothes on.
Why? What I mean is why miss southern vietnam? Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is well worth a visit and then you can travel in style (well... budget-style) along the Mekong into Cambodia with an easy border crossing.
Bongerman is right, end up in phnom penh, not so dangerous and less likely to get rip'd of..Hey Bongerman,re Eric the beggar, you got any info.didnt like the man personally ,found him a Fxxxk nuisance.Am returning in sept so by then the trilogy will unfold,as to where, what an how,he,s been on the missing list,? come to think of it didnt that girl leave the jungle after 12 years alone in january.maybe ...just maybe

Thanks for your answers guys. I suspect that there is no border crossing there, as I have looked on the customs website and it was just listed. I was just confused why there is a road clearly marked on the map which passes over the border in the North East of Cambodia.

The reason why we would prefer to skip the bottom half of Vietnam is because we have limited time. We only have 5 - 6 weeks and want to spend a few weeks in Thailand and Cambodia as well. Cutting through to Cambodia from Hoi An would save alot of time, and we want to limit our time sitting in a seat in a bus/train. Also I have already been up through the southern part of Vietnam, up to Nga Trang and have been told that the best part of Vietnam is the north.
