Three individuals walk into a shop.

They each spend 9 and hand the shopkeeper a 10 note.

The shop keeper takes 5 out the til and gives each of them 1.

He puts 2 in his pocket.

So 3 x 9 = 27
the 2 in his pocket totals 29.
Where is the extra 1

The 2 in his pocket is irrelevant ... the 30 is made up from 3 x 9 = 27.00 + 1 x 3 given in change.
Looking at it from another angle .. there is a total of 35 in the transaction ... made up of 30 (3 x 10 notes paid into till) + 3 change + 2 in shopkeeper's pocket.

Thank you Sarumite, That makes more sense. I was feeling really dumb.
.....Also in your original amazing statement you have counted the two pound in the shopkeeper's pocket twice. The three nines includes the "payment" to the shopkeeper and then you add it on again to get your twentynine .... ? Becausetwentynine is so close to thirty you think it ought to be thirty... in fact the "amazing statement should read
3 X 9 = 27
with the 3 they got back totals 30

..... but that would be boring and definitley not amazing

Can't believe this stupid 'riddle' is still rearing its head and that there is anyone around who hasn't yet heard it in one form or another. There is never a missing 1, it's just based on false reasoning and your version doesn't even make a good 'story'. If he has to give them 3 change, why would he take out 5 and put 2 of his own money in his pocket?
