3. Prior to 1920 silver coins were struck from sterling silver, an alloy of which 925 parts in 1000 were silver. In 1920 the proportion of silver was reduced to 500 parts. From 1 January 1947 all 'silver' coins , except Maundy money, have been struck from cupro-nickel. Maundy coins continue to be struck from sterling silver.
