minimum wage
A friend of mine is a qualified hairdresser is a local salon.
She is exploited dreadfully and possibly underpaid, yet is too frightened to speak up. She is 20 years of age. Personally I would never allow this to happen. She works a five day week Inc Saturdays but has every Tuesday off. For example: She is on a 'break' yet if the telephone rings she has to answer it. This is work related thus is not a break. If she is with a client at the end of the day at say 5.30 and she is due off then she is made to stay on until the job is done. Then is NOT paid overtime! On some occasions she has to 'stay late' i.e. until 7.30pm to clean the salon. Again, is not paid overtime. She is treated awfully. Do I intervene? Can I report the employer anonymously to somebody? She has all this grief for a measly 670 a month (168 a week.)
Any advice please ABs

If she wanted to get advice on breaks and overtime pay, I would suggest contacting ACAS on 08457 47 47 47 or visiting their website www.acas.co.uk .The NMW for 18-21 year olds is 4.45p/h and if she isn't receiving this and wanted advice, there is a helpline to ring on 0845 6000 678.
