The numbers at the side are the number of squares to be filled in in that row or column, with a number of blank squares inbetween (put a dot in the middle of the square to denote a blank space).
e.g take the fourth row from the bottom 4.2.11.1.3. This means that 21 of these squares are to be filled in , in a row that has 30 spaces, which means that when you count from either side there must be some overlap. From the left, count 4 plus a space, then 2 plus a space, then count 11. This eleventh square has to be a black one. Count from the other side ; 3 plus a space, 1 plus a space ; then count 11-- at the sixth one that you already have filled in, you can now fill in the next 5 squares. Go through the whole grid like this e.g columns 11,24,25 and 26 , and gradually the whole grid can be logically deduced.and a picture will appear. Good luck !
