what is pudding in american cake mix
I bought what I thought would be a fab cookery book to do cakes with my kids but the receipes are for cake mixes which I can live with but then all they all say to use cake mixes with pudding or no pudding. Does anyone know what this is and do English cake mixes have it or not? Cheers!

They were either or both Betty Crocker and/or Duncan Hines brand. I didn't use them - so I am not sure if they are still available here.
Some of our recipes say to put a box of Jello Instant Pudding in the cake mix when you make a cake.

here in england i think jello comes in small sachets and is made up with water into a kind of thin jelly-ish substance which you would use to glaze a fruit flan. the kind of thing you might get on a bought strawberry tart. just comes in orange or strawberry as far as i remember, and you'd find it along with the lemon merangue/empty flan cases in the supermarket.
Muppet - Jello is a brand name and it is owned by Kraft. They make Jello Gelatin - like what you guys call jelly - but they also make instant puddings - the kind that if you had to make them from scratch at home you would use flour, eggs, milk, etc. and cook them. They also make other products.
The Jello Instant Pudding comes in a box as a dry powder - all you do is whisk it into some milk and put it in the fridge and 5 minutes later you have a pudding. If you put it in a cake mix - you would just put the dry powder in it and then make the cake as usual.

haha!-to translate from american.to english:in the UK,'pudding' refers to any number of sweets that are served at the end of a meal, while in the States 'pudding' is a particular type of mousse-like sweet. The closest thing in England to "jello" pudding is probably Angel Delight-also an instant "pudding" mix.
