Apart from the French connection, meaning 'grey', it is a variant of 'gree' which is an obsolete/dialect word meaning degree, rank etc. I can see where K got the idea of grist = supplies, but I don't see any connection with a "value of statistical significance" in the word 'gris'. That is certainly covered by the 'rms' abbreviation, however. But, over to you, obviously.
