did you give your children "that talk" or is sex ed. in school sufficient?

My parents never gave me "the talk" and the sex education in school was appauling. In fact is was almost non existent. We had one lesson of PSE a week which usually involved learning about how to treat others, asking our views on controversial issues etc. But nohing on actual sex education. I started by periods just two weeks after starting at secondary school and I had never been told what periods were.I thought I was going to die and couldn't understand where the blood was coming from.It was the worst 5 days of my life and it was some 6 days later that I understood partially what periods were.
Also when I was 13 I missed a period.I thought the ONLY reason I could have missed a period was if I was pregnant.Since I was not sexually active at all I came to the conclusion that I had in some way come in contact with sperm and believed until my period came the next month that I was pregnant!
Despite this I don't believe children should be given the sex talk by their parents.Sometimes The sex ed. in school is sufficient but even when it isn't NO child wants to be told that stuff by their parents.Parents should leave it to the kids to fnd the info. out themselves. You agree?

A parent should not rely on the school to tell their child.
Perhaps the parents and teachers should work side by side rather than expect the other to do the job.
Their are possibly too many under age pregnancies as either parent or teacher has not given the full facts.
Whats more embarassing, your mum telling you about sex or you having to tell her your pregnant at 15?

i was only joking, i just couldnt be bothered to gove this person a serious answer.
i do think that parents should talk to thero children and be open about sex and stuff.
i also think that schools should have a better sex ed lesson plan - we has a talk at the age of 15 about periods where some woman stuck a sanitary pad on her hand and made a puppet out of it.....Bearing in mind we has all started our period and half the people there were already sleeping with each other most probably!

I dont agree.
sex talk at school sometimes skirts around certain subjects. I was never told anything by my parents or school, I learnt most of it from my friends. I have talked to my teenage daughter about periods what they're for and sex. She sometimes comes to me with questions like how long periods last for and why do people have sex other than to have babies. I'm glad she can come to me about it. I never discussed those isues with my mum. I would rather she came to me than find out too late. I have discussed when she is old enough and in a relationship where she is ready to have sex (hopefully not until she is mature enough) that she will discuss it with me so I can help her with contraception. I'm having another baby in November and I'm hoping the screaming at night will put her off even the thought of sex for a long time. At the moment she still finds it quite disgusting which is good. haha
