Thank you. Necessary puts out eyeglass which someone suggested yesterday but I am sure it is right. Do you have any suggestions for: Lear's daughter had one on a string (8) e - - - y - s - I can only fit essayist in there. Does that have any relevance?
Many thanks.
Hi Lottie - sorry but I can't make sense of 'Essayist' in relation to your final clue. King Lear had 3 daughters so possibly one had an association with an essayist ?? Bit unlikely . . .

12a I reckon 'Necessary' is a safe bet - reminds me of Arthur Daley - 'Have you got the necessary Terry?" (meaning spondulicks, dosh, wonga . . . )

Do please come back and share your answer when you find it! Cheers, ☺ja

Charles Lamb was an essayist who wrote under the name Elia, in 'The Essays of Elia'. A string is a cord. Cord+elia. So 'one' is an essayist.
er, just to expand on that, Cordelia was one of King Lear's daughters.

Brilliant! Thank you. I did know all those facts but I would never have made the connection. I will be given the answers tomorrow so I will let you know if you are right, which I am sure you are.
Excellent solution jno. Regards, ja.

All the answers you suggested were correct so thank you again. I have now started on the next one but will do as much as I can before bothering anyone again. Cheers.
