Animated Film about 15 years ago

Help. I am trying to track down an obscure animated film that was shown on tv about 15 years ago. I was fairly certain that the film was called Space Raiders/ Space Racers/ Star Raiders or something along those lines. Not convinced it was british or ameican or even japanese in origin. Possibly dubbed european. Was set in space. Involved the crew of a ship talking to an abandoned young boy on a planet via a radio. Boy had a four legged creature for a companion for a while but it died after tentacle like things grabbed it in a cave. Boy had blonde hair. There was an old man on the ship who played the banjo alot and had a metal plate in his head which I think later transpired that he was the little boy and they were talking to him across time. (fuzzy memory of this sorry) Film ended with boy being rescued as he was being attacked in the head by some big buzzing insects, hence the metal plate/ old guy connection. I remember some other scenes involved lots of little multi-coloured people being 'born' out of a huge lilly pad type plant. Also remember a scene with a huge staircase encased in fire. It was shown in the xmas holidays, like I say about 15 years ago fairly late in the evening I think. Sorry for rambling but its been driving me mad for years Cheers

That's strange. Mrlxolite gives a possible name for the film, and when checked, at first glance appears to be the one he wants. It had a young boy who carried a little alien creature.

Sorry, I forgot to check whether it was animated or live action. "Space Raiders" appears to be live action.
