A factory melts down old candle stubs and forms them into new candles. From every 9 stubs it can make 1 new candle .

From 921 stubs, how many candles can possibly be made in total?

102 leaving 3 stubsworth
yes but then those 102 can be melted down!!!!
Quite, Diane. I make it 102 + 11 + 1 + 1 = 115.
What!??? surely if you melt down the 102 you can make another 102 for ever unless you somehow factor breakdown of the material. Where are you getting your figs from please? I'm confused
Oh I just realised. You are burning the 102 candles then using the stubs to make the other ones. Clever stuff.
I got as far as 114 and 7/9 before running out of fingers (and stubs)!

921 stubs = 102 new candles with 3 stubs over
102 stubs +3 = 105 stubs = 11 new candles with 6 stubs over.
11stubs + 6 =17 stubs = 1 new candle with 8 stubs over
1 stub with 8 left = 9 stubs = 1 new candle.
SO ! total = 102 +11 +1 +1 which is 115 candles with 1stub left.
