Hello. Can someone tell me how Lewis Carroll's father, the Rev Charles Dodgson, died. I know he died in 1868 and is buried in Ireland and he was in the Dragoon Guards.. I can find nothing more on Google Thank you
Captain Charles Dodgson, grandfather of Lewis Carroll, is buried in the Church of Ireland graveyard in Daingean. Captain Dodgson was stationed with the 4th Regiment of the Royal Irish Dragoon Guards in Philipstown barracks (the building was later the reformatory). Following the failed Robert Emmet rebellion in Dublin in 1803 the ringleaders dispersed and two of them, Wilde and Mahon made their way to Daingean and later to Ballycommon. There was a price on their heads and it appears that Dodgson and a Major Longfield went in search of the fugitives to Ballycommon who were well armed and not going to give up without a fight. They fought their way out killing Dodgson [16th December 1803] and wounding Longfield and eventually escaped to America.
Thank you very much, you're right, it is his grandfather that is buried in Daingean, I have seen the grave and the locals told me it was Lewis Carroll's father but I wondered how a country parson ended up in the Dragoon Guards.
The Ancestry.com suggestion is excellent, I have a subscription with them but never thought of it
Thank you for your research
