Clues/suggestions seem to have dried up on 53: 'Loaf around for a while'
FLOAT STONE was put forward as an answer, but I cannot fully justify it. I can understand 'float' and the 'a while' (Chambers' definition of silica etc.). Has anyone any ideas, PLEASE??

What does a loaf become when it's been around a while?

Float Stone is not the answer ... as you say, Chambers does not justify it. Neither does the clue.

I don't like stale bread - not really a phrase.
I have bread stick.
Loaf around for a while?

a crptic clue, significantly with a question mark at the end ...

so, it would not appear to be the straightforward meaning of 'loaf around' as in 'hang about .....

the 'sense' leand towards being 'loaf around' as in a loaf (of bread) has been around for a while ....

Athenae, I really do not understand your reply. I am probably being v. stupid, but this is the last question that I have to answer and I am obviously missing the point...HELP!
ooops ... didnt mean to confuse .... just trying to give hint ...

this is a cryptic clue with a question mark at the end .....

a question mark at the end of a cryptic clue usueally means that the answer could be interpreted as meaning loaf around for a while

have to decvide on the meaning of 'loaf' ....

is it loaf of bread, or

loaf around, as in hang around.

..... Bread is a word for 'Money' .....

this clue has generated many different answer ideas ....

One of the answers already given is 'Stale Bread' .... .... {but, not 100% sure}

I have had DAILY BREAD, STALE BREAD, DOUGH ......, and then picked up on FLOAT STONE. The problem is that you know when you get the correct answer to a question in this quiz and you cannot say that about any of the above???
"Stale bread" fits the clue to a T. None of the others are remotely connected - even when performing extreme contortions of the imagination.
