Should we build more motorways?
With the nation equally divided about building more motorways and the building of 3 million new homes isn't it the time to consider their merits and planning? A suggestion was put forward to building a ring road around London outside the M25 at a radius of approx 35 miles taking in the shipping ports to the east stretching to Milton Keynes and round to Reading and extending to Guildford before merging into an enlarged southerly M25. Without more building or much higher road tolls we will be gridlocked and most people would then surely approve the road building. Do you agree we need more motorways?

Even though the government has raised fuel taxes to skyscraper heights people refuse or are unable to give up their cars. Also if a congestion charge is added this will make little no difference to their use. Except for M6 toll road no motorways have been built for decades. Widening of existing motorways has negligible effect because an accident closes that part of the motorway.
While we are sitting in traffic jams does that help the environment with fumes emitted from stationary vehicles.
Why doesn't the government return some of these exhorbitant taxes to new road building.

Quite agree Joe. I notice they often quote population densities when mentioning land mass but I feel we would have a lot more information if the government started quoting vehicle density on our motorways. From someone who once did driving for a living I have noted the record expansion of traffic and there is nowhere to escape from it whatever the time of day.
