A little hedgehog was scuttling round and round in circles on the road in front of the house last night. He/she kept going round in the same direction then lurching a little distance and doing the same again. Was it ill?

Steve D might well be right. It's a classic sign of brain damage in animals. My blind cat has done it when he gets confused, which I should think is also related to brain function.
