I am fairly new to this site but I have already noticed that relatively few people seem to do (or have problems with) the Times Cryptic puzzles. However, lots of people appear to do the Mail on Sunday. Am I missing something ?

There's no hard rule here but most folk will favour one kind of crossword or the other. i.e. Cryptic or General Knowledge. With cryptic you either get the answer or you don't; with GK you either get the answer or you can't.
A good example is "xanthochroism" (I think) in yesterday's MOS.

danoran, in the days I used to commute to London I use to do the Times cryptic (newspaper's size was a help on the train!). I now, for various reasons to do with the editorial direction of the Times, do the Telegraph.
However, that is all slightly, as they say, off message. People who do the Times crossword and cannot complete it would rather drop their trousers and expose themselves in a public place in preference to asking for help on an internet site!!!
