I'm torn between "the wait" and "the past" but don't really like either!!

It's a shame really. It would have been so easy to make 5A DUE EAST and then 5D could have been DIE CAST.

I'm also assuming that 28A is THE DOGS?

Didn't like this crossword at all, with all those 'the's.

I didn't like yesterday's cryptic either. New compilers, perhaps?
