Why??
12 Answers
If I am stuck on a crossword clue I either look up books (obviously very out of favour) or "google" or "ask" it. This is a wonderful site - very entertaining at times (marlasinger - consider yourself tagged) why can't people find answers out for themselves? - using this (and I do) is a little bit like copying someone elses work and/or knowledge. :(

Usually, I finish the crossword without any help, but there are times when I just can't 'see' the answer so I ask for help or an extra clue. By the same token, I'm happy to help others with the clues they are stuck on.
You are just as much "copying" someone's knowledge when you google an answer for yourself. What is wrong with a site where people can answer what they like on many many topics and other people can answer them? We have a few self appointed police from time to time criticising people who they feel ask too much. Some of us just enjoy answering.
Entirely agree with "podger123". When you use "google" to search for an answer, you (and you alone) get the answer, but when you ask a question on AB, everyone gets the answer. And before anyone says, "you don't have to look at it", that is not the point (as has been said many times before on here).
Posting answers on here, puts them in the public domain - something that cannot be said if you do the reasearch yourself using any search engine. Now there's a novel idea!

Podger, if you go in the library and ask the librarian for help because you cant find something, does that become "cheating"? In my response I didnt mention cheating. I just said it was all "copying" someone else's knowledge one way or the other.
Sometimes ABers are more efficient googlers.
Boys in Blue is making a rather different point in that he objects to other people seeing the answers supplied. On this site you cannot pre-screen every question for how much effort the asker has already put in. Neither can you stop people from seeing the answers. I was trying to make the point that some of us enjoy supplying answers. Nothing more than that.

grasscarp - I except you cannot stop people answering questions, after all, it is called "answerbank". I also fully accept that you and any many others are fully entitled to answer questions posed on AB. However, my point is that you are merely helping the so called "lazy people", for many of whom it is clear that they cannot or do not bother to look for the answers themselves and just rely on others to "give them away". It makes it very frustrating when you enter a quiz, knowing that you have put in all the effort yourself (and have left blanks or had educated guesses when you cannot find an answer), but that you are competing against those who have no scruples about using someone's answer. Surely, it is the researching of the answers that helps us to gain more knowledge - if people are simply given the answer, they will not learn and will continue to be lazy and ask for answers.
There was a short time back when th AB was so slow it was well nigh unusable. Now this great site now seems fine. However it would probably be faster still if it were not for the morons who do not do enough prior research and do not follow AB's guidance which asks you to check if your question has already been answered. The laziness of these people often exemplified by the facts that (a) many fail to give puzzle/x-word name and/or fail to give the number of letters, letalone the letters and blanks. Many just want the answer served up on a plate.
squarebear - I think we've been here before! However, I would like to make two points. Firstly, as many quizzes are for charities and the charity gets the money" up front" as you put it, then why in the world do people need to ask for answers on here (apart from the fact that they are bone idle and don't want to do the work themselves)? The charity have the money so there is no relationship between the amount of money the charity gets and the number of questions answered.
Secondly, on your own admission, you support these quizzes (which is admirable) but you rarely enter the quizzes. Perhaps then, the next time you go to help one of the "lazy people", you'll spare a thought for the likes of me who wants to do the "donkey work" and find the answers by good honest toil (and compete against fellow people with the same outlook)?
