This is from last week, was away in Greece so it never got posted. 16a A great work of literature in Latin.
(6,4) -a-n-s -p-s. Thought it might be Magnum Opus but doesn't fit with 6d. Start of a Hydyn symphony (8) I have written ' surprise' hence the s. Would it possibly be supreme?

'Magnum opus' is surely correct...

'Supreme' only has 7 letters...What letters do you have placed for 6d - where does the 'M' need to be?

8-letter Haydn symphonies (that I can find with a quick look!) that include an 'M' -

Military
Drumroll

(??)

The M is second to last of 8 letters. The S at the start is correct and so are the 2 rr's. Like you, I believe, Magnum opus has to be correct.

Also the Surprise is Haydn symphony 94. Start is to surprise. Do you think the FT could have made a mistake.
Hi miss skippy - sorry for the delay, had to use the phone!

I too thought of the 'Surprise' = 'Start', & as I can't see a symphony to fit 'S_R_R_M_', then an FT slip-up is looking likely!

Someone cleverer than me may be able to tell you differently though...
