What Scottish banks' own banknotes are legal tender, and are they legal tender throughout the UK?

Thanks, pinus. A Canadian friend is coming to Scotland, then to Ireland tracing family roots and I wanted to give accurate advice about the notes. Now I can.

Can't see how they are not legal tender even in Scotland when that is what the cash dispensers ... errrrm ... dispense!! Royal Bank of Scotland, Bank of Scotland and Clydesdale Banks all produce their own notes. I have been able to use them without any problem in all the High Street Stores all over England and Wales, however it is at the discretion of the Manager of a business as to whether they will accept the Scottish notes. This is purely because of the high number of counterfeit notes that have been around the past few years.

Sorry meant to add that IF a retail outlet does not wish to take the Scottish notes then any High Street Bank will happily exchange it for an English one. xxx

well if they are going to Ireland then in the North they also have sterling notes issued by the Northern bank, Aliied Irish bank, Ulster bank and Bank of Ireland just to make things nice and confusing for you :>)

Even though they are not legal tender they are recognised forms of exchange.

Thank you all. They're going from Glasgow on to Dublin and round the Irish Republic, euro-land. I've advised them to change any Scottish notes into euros before leaving Glasgow. Saves any possible hoo-ha.
