creepy school caretaker concerns...
17 Answers
I would like to know how much access a school caretaker has to office files etc, does he have keys to access pupil information or is that out of his reach?
the reason being ther's a caretaker at my neice's secondary school and she pointed him out to me the other day, well I can see how the girls label him a bit freaky and unnerving. Am sure he's a nice enough guy but in such a position and after past happenings just thought I'd ask you guys out there if anyone knows what exactly he has access to?

I can, to a degree, understand teenagers judging him because they have very little life experience and don't know any better but you - as the adult and should know better - should be teaching your neice NOT to judge anyone on how they look.

I have just answered this on the Answerbank Suggestions section. If this is just a case of someone looking a bit strange and your niece has no real grounds for complaint then she should leave well alone. If she does have cause then she should take up her concerns with her head of year. She should be very careful that this is not just a vendetta of sorts against someone who just looks a bit odd. Caretakers like all school staff are subject to CRB checking.
I sympathise and think that people on here are being too harsh. In my experience, kids are very intuitive and perceptive, and they are usually spot on when judging characters- be it a good teacher or a creepy caretaker.
Caretakers will have the keys to every room in the school and will often be there when nobody else is- ie- on a Saturday or Sunday. Of course they have access to files. Ours are kept on a shelf in the staffroom for anyone to access who needs to- including the caretaker if he was there on his own.
However, I don't think that having access to files would make a difference to him. If he was going to do something weird he wouldn't read up first, he would just do it. And as the others have said, I'm sure he is normal and CRN checked etc.

Tosh.
I remember me and my mates sniggering about a male teacher that looked weird, adulthood has made me realise that it was a nasty thing to have done and looking dodgy doesn't make someone dodgy.
Sure there's people out there who DO do bad things and take advantage of their position, but not eveyone does and NOBODY deserves to be hung, drawn and quartered when they haven't done anything wrong.

No he wasn't and THAT was the very thing that changed the law.
Like I said before, there will be times where someone will try to abuse his or her position, but the question author has not provided us with ANY cause to believe that this man is doing just that and that is what I'm objecting to here.
I would be upset if I thought people were assuming I'm up to no good just because I may look different to them.

Thanks for all your answers and sorry if some of you found it quite judgemental I guess you too were judgemental in your answers. That's the thing we are all judgemental but sometimes as Scarlett said it's not about being judgemental it's about instinct and intuition and from what the girls have told me there's something just 'not right' bout this guy or his behaviour ' but it's hard to put a finger on a specific . Yes my impression was clouded by what i had been told of him but yes I too got a vibe off him . Of course I try and impart 'don't judge a book...' but where kids are concerned and they are in a vulnerable position I also stress to trust instincts.Anyhow thanks again.Nutella
Its not about being judgemental? I am sorry but it is - you have made up your mind about someone through instinct and intuition - which is just as likely to be wrong as it is right. Saying something is 'just not right' when there is absolutely nothing specific you or the girls can point to is hardly the attitude you want to impart to your niece.
He seems to be creepy so he must automatically be up to no good - balderdash.

You can't judge all school caretakers by IH. My son used to tend school grounds and was dismissed because he was shirtless on a hot summers day.....the girls freaked at him! He was only 19 while they were around 14.....stupid, or what? The job wasn't worth further hassle.
This poor man may have dependants relying on the income he makes from his job....I suggest you express this to your niece, gently, to let her know she must have firm grounds for any accusations......'creepy' is a description very unfair if its groundless.

Most pupil information's kept on computer now, and in fact, an outside agency holds much of this at the school which my children attend. Parents can phone in with a special ID code, and get up-to-date info about all sorts of school activities, help, their child's progress, etc. I'm sure that a caretaker wouldn't have access to any of this, and unless he leers at the students, or acts improperly, then his manner and dress is irrelevant. The school must be happy with this person, otherwise he wouldn't be in the job, particularly after "past happenings".
