I think it may be Watling Street because the N is correct. However, I have no idea why Watling makes it an old thoroughfare! :O)

Thanks for the reference. I get the fact that the road is old, but considering it was supposed to be a cryptic crossword, there are hardly two meanings to Very old thoroughfare, are there? Never mind, can't have everything! :O)
