Cryptic Clue

Can someone please explain how this clue works, as I cannot understand the solution or even the clue's definition?
'Broken cast left damaged, for example. (4.11)

Apparent solution is Past Participles

Can't immediately see how the clue works - although broken, cast, left and damaged are all past participles - but there must be more to it than that.
The answer is definitely past participles, I suppose
Yes, that's it: just a cryptic definition. As Junkman says, it's just four examples of past participles. Nicely done clue.

I think this is a clue from The Week by Tom Moorey who is a very good setter & who also is involved with the Sunday Times Mephisto.

I agree with QM1 that it was a nicely done clue.
