10A Slang used to describe popular US city L_N_I_G (3rd letter N assumes 2D 'Fruit - it may go off' is Pineapple which fits perfectly but can't grasp why the 'it may go off'. Help appreciated on this bit to finish - out all day so tried to whizz through it but now tired and want to go to bed!
sarumite - thanks so much for trying so quickly to help me out but 2D does seem to start P as the across clue giving the P is 'Record attempt to suppress second hanging' which constructs nicely as TAPE (record) S (second) TRY (attempt) i.e. TAPESTRY.
Hence the clue I can't do anyway re US city and the inability to work out PINEAPPLE satisfactorily.
PS I think you're one of the few still logged in!
Sarumite - you're a star. My brain just wasn't picking up the right cryptic line of enquiry.
I can now get off to bed and just hope in the morning I'll get a Eureka moment to satisfy me how the pineapple clue is constructed!
