Shall I go for retirees or retirers? I'm inclined to the former but open to suggestions.

Its the correct answer too!
Thank you Catron :-)

Thanks both, glad you were so positive that retirees is correct catron. Internet dictionaries suggest both as correct but I feel that retirers is just a sloppy word probably invented by our trans-atlantic cousins who use words like realty, honor and the like !!!
Agreed 100%
Sorry, manofsteel, should perhaps have said why I know that it is the correct answer. The Telegraph Crossword Society allows one to check answers - if they are right they are coloured green and if wrong they are coloured red. Retirees was coloured green and is therefore the correct answer - or the one that the compiler was looking for, at any rate!

That's an interesting little bit of information Catron, Thanks again.
But thats not going to work for Tarnish v's Varnish :-)
No, afraid not pbeach - not for that crossword or any other Telegraph prize crossword, sadly :-(

We shall know soon enough whether it is varnish, tarnish or anything else, I guess!
Catron - is access to the Telegraph Crossword Society by subscription, and if so, can I ask how much?
Hi Archie, yes it is subscription based and is 30 a year. If you would like to know more about it, try here:

Thanks for that, Catron. :)
