The first one I think is BLEAT - a sort of complaint. The second i suppose is MEEDS - wages. I cannot see the wordplay in either, though.Any help?

Thank you all: I had 1a as ABSORBTANCE but now I see that it should be absorptance; I didn't look at the anagram properly.
As for WEEDS - my mind would not go beyond Minute being M.
