Hutton was probably the first to appreciate how old the Earth must be in order for its geology etc to be as it is. The timescales involved are big enough to seem as good as infinite so he compared them to "the abyss", which is a sort of bottomless pit. Nowadays, geologists talk about "deep time", meaning the same thing.
