Does anyone know where I can buy a paperback copy of Chambers Phrase File by Roger Prebble. The copy I have is falling to pieces, with several front and back pages missing and the rest held together with sellotape, through much helpful use. I have tried everywhere I can think of but have had no luck. Perhaps it is now out of print.

Thanks very much. I'll have a look on there. I'm surprised it cannot be bought in shops as it would be very helpful to cryptic crossword addicts like myself!

I've never heard of this book before. I looked on Amazon but it didn't tell me anything about it other than availability and price. Can you tell me something about it - as a keen doer of cryptic crosswords, I might be interested in putting it on my Christmas wish list!

I have a Chambers Fiction File , also falling to bits from almost daily usage, which has author. title and character lists.
Have you checked out ebay? You can list requests.

In answer to Christiana. This is a phrase file giving phrases for different lengths. i.e. 12 letters - 4,1,4,3 = have a nice day, pull a fast one, turn a deaf ear. It starts off with 4 letters (I think, my earlier pages are missing) and goes up to 15 letters. All in order of number of letters in phrase. As the examples above, then goes on the 4,1,5,2 = take a pride in. etc. There are thousands of phrases in the book, very easy to use and very helpful when you know the number of letters in a clue, how many words and number of letters in each word. I've had it for several years and made good use of it but it is very tatty now. I'm surprised it seems to be out of print now. It's not very big, about 8inches by 5inches.

I also remember it had yellow and green cover. Also I have been putting it on my Christmas list for years hoping one of my children could track it down.
