insurance to cover holding small events?
I hold about 4 quizzes a year in a local village hall. In past years we have been covered by a group insurance but are no longer. Before I can hold further quizzes I need to get cover ?public liability in case of a problem occuring. Can anyone suggest where I might go to get this cover and how much it is likely to cost.
There are usually about 50 - 60 people at these functions and all our monies are donated to charity so it is important that I get athe best deal.

Surely the premises itself is insured for damages? I can't imagine a not for profit quiz is expected to have publilc liability insurance. I've no experience of similar but I've got to believe this is massive over-reaction, no?

Well I'm not sure how important it is but should someone, say trip or slip or something, I'm worried I as the organisor would be liable. The premises are covered should damage be caused to someone by the pemises, ie loose flooring etc but if someone damaged the premises while at the event who would be responsible. I've been doing these for over 10 yrs with no probs but theres always a 1st time and it makes me uncomfortable until I'm sure. I asked an insuramnce company and they said we did need cover but were not prepared to cover as the work involved for the costs was not worth it and the risks were high??
I would have thought that the venue you use should have public liability insurance. This is usualy included in the terms of hire even if you get it for free. So unless they spacificly say we no longer cover you you shouldn't have to get it. Often they charge a little extra to be included on it.
However if you run the quizes for a spacific charity they should be able to give you an authority to raise funds and you should then be covered by their insurance.

As an insurance broker I often get asked this and I have to say its not terribly clear cut! In basic terms, you need to check out what insurance is provided as part of your renting the room. Many authorities will have PL included but there are a growing number who don't. If its not included then for a small premium it can easily be obtained and it is sensible to do so.

Thanks Noahboy. I have contacted the trustees of the hall and there policy only covers acc which are caused by the structure?? there is no public liability for eneral usage. I would rather take out a seperate cover and be safe than sorry. I have been looking on the net today and found a multiple vent Pl copver for up to 15 events p[er year for �150 which doesnt seem too bad. Any advice would be welcomed. Obviously the more I pay out the less the charity gets!!
To Noahboy- I have checked with the trustees and they have cover should there be an accident wherethe hall structure is at fault, for example a roof tile falls and hurts someone but apparently there is no public liability for the users at their events and they say its far too complicated for them to provide cover. I just feel I would rather take out my own than be caught out, it would spoil all the fun of the events we hold.

However in the mean time if you think �150 for you four quizes a year you must obviously take this into consideration when doing your costings.
You could also spread the cost with perhaps someone else who puts on small charity events as well.
Overall I think that PL insurance should be included in the rental costs. Imagine what would happen if the event organiser was a bit of a shyester who did a runner after there was some sort of accident?
If someone slipped on the premmises then they should still be able to claim of the pl of the building.
