There's a good meditation technique... lie down so you're comfortable, then go through each body part very slowly and try to feel each one individually... like, start with your left foot, and think about each toe - whether they are touching each other or anything else, whether they are damp, or dry, or itchy... slowly move on through your whole body this way, not moving or tightening or loosening muscles but just noticing. When I do it the whole thing takes 25-30 minutes. At the end, just stay for a while noticing your natural breathing.
I relate, just being in a messy room stresses me out, but again, I totally agree with moog because the times I do the most serious cleaning is when something else is stressing me out. For aromatherapy, Lavender helps me chill out, it's like and orgasm in my nose! as well as a hot bath/shower and a massage from a friend (I couldn't pay my husband to do it!) What zgma said is also very good, I do a light strech beforehand just to release any stress that might be hiding between my muscles.
And remember, when cleaning it always gets much worse before it actually starts looking clean. Just chill out, go rent a movie and soak your feet in a small heated tub and just do anything you can think of to pamper yourself. Good luck!
There are loads of different methods to relax and quiet the mind. Yes aromatherapy is one of them. There are also various meditation techniques, and even practices such as reiki can dramatically reduce stress. The main thing is though, is to take time out and make time for any of these.
I even find that just listening to relaxation music can help. Especially when using it hand in hand with one of the above therapies.
Hope this helps.
