I understand the Auckland answer, though I've never read the poem, but Genet still needs some explanation. He may be a French novelist, but 'spotted in the African savannah'? Just curious! - thanks!
A genet is a spotted civet like animal from Africa
a genet is an animal with a spotted coat and long ringed tailed to be found in African savannah
