Is it butts i.e. as in butts of remarks ?

3D Joined in four quarters (4)

Would start with "S" of butts if that is correct. Is it sewn ?

butts is correct. a buitt can be an object of ridicule or a shooting butt.
3d is sewn. the four points of the compass.

SEW and N are the four cardinal compass points (quarters).

Thanks Baitress and Rollo. Butts I was sure about but sewn I wasn't. Clever clue for sewn but could'nt work out the four points of the compass theme. Thanks again to you both.
