Hi Samtog - it's 'Gurkha', I'm afraid... :-)
Question Author
Thank you Samtog. and Lie in King, I got the message. An easy mistake.
I'm confused now! I have 22a english channel which gives me 19d as *h*r*a. so is it sherpa or ghurka ? Happy New Year all.
You're correct with 'English channel', which gives you 'Sherpa' - your spelling of 'Gurkha' is incorrect - & Happy New Year to you & yours :-)
Question Author
Happy New Year Inglepingle - the concensus seems to be that it is Ghurka. it really could be either, so maybe its a choice.
Question Author
OK - I have altered it to Sherpa again. Thank you all.
The correct term must be sherpa, ghurka is not the correct spelling is it!
I think it's sherpa. I couldn't find a mongolian link to gurkha (or whatever spelling) who came from the west? I did find a mongolian link to sherpa though, who came from the east:-

I'm putting sherpa in.
19d is definitely sherpa. a gurkha is from nepal
i'm going to put the cat among the pigeons! While checking out Nepal I discovered that some of the people living there are called tharus, therefore I put the answer down as tharia! My crosswords are already enveloped so I'm not changing now.
fotheringham - I think that the Tharu are indigenous to Nepal rather than coming from Mongolia?
