I'm sure we all admire your tenacity with the Spectator each week, but can I repeat what others have said and recommend that you first master some less advanced crosswords.

It can't be much fun having to ask for assistance with virtually every clue.

Please accept my comments in the spirit they are meant.

Good luck K

I have been mastering the more straightforward cryptic crosswords and just feel that I should not now limit myself to one type. Granted, the Spectator is quite challenging and one might even say somewhat esoteric at times, and that is the fascination! I understand that those who have mastered the art of the Spectator might be unnerved by lesser mortals seeking to learn and understand! But I will not be deterred because I, too, am sure that my tenacity will, at some stage, be rewarded -- and I do not mean financially, since I do the puzzle to learn! So, thanks for your help again! And let's all keep puzzling in the generous spirit of learning and helping others to learn! Have a good day!
Yes, Matakari, I do agree. We started the Spectator three years ago and now, almost always, complete it with ease but we are struggling with the Listener and, despite being regarded as numpties, will go on doing so. Keep going and don't be put down!
