Surely this was asked somewhere else? I worked it as a vulgar fraction and got 2.02 or 2 1/45

You're right about the vulgar fraction teram - I replied below you, but got to another answer and pointed out how to do it.
It came down to 21 over 45, which is divisible again . The greatest common divisor is 3, so the answer is 7 15ths - I'm pretty sure of it. x

You need to work out the number of 45ths in each part as 45 is the lowest common multiple of 9 and 5.

Therefore 6 1/9 = 275/45 and 1/5 = 9/45.

Therefore 275-9 = 266/45 or 5 41/45

This is the same as Rollo came up with but shows the method.

Tis a long time since my school days so my answer is not reliable. Y did I need to have such rubbish dinned into me that I've never needed to use, till now!

Worse, I recall the maths teacher hitting me on the head with ruler edge but can't remember a fax number I was given an hour ago.
