Hi Bribet,
I got SPEND.
Taken from USE at the end of the Crusader's clue and PASS from the Squire's clue. I have to confess though, that the rest of the Cruader's clue has left me somewhat puzzled. If you have now sussed it or someone else could shed further light that would be good!

I used SPEND but like you I sometimes find the easy clues and the cryptic clues don't always seem to gel
