My daughter- in- law's computer has frozen with the following message repeated 9 or 10 times-
'Correcting error in index $0 for File 25'.

Can anyone please advise me what she should do to
solve this problem and get her computer working again.

If you could put any instructions in basic/ layman terms that would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Sounds like the disk is on the way out.
Try to back up what you can as soon as possible.

You could run a check disk which will attempt to find and repair bad areas of the disk. If you can get to a command prompt, try: chkdsk /R

Thanks for that.

The problem is that the computer appears to be jammed and she cannot run any tests or do anything.
She thinks she will have to switch it off at the mains which I know is not recommended.
Sometimes you have no choice but to switch it off.

Is it XP? See if you can get it to repair mode and run the chkdsk command as squarebear says. That might shift it.

It is XP and we'll try what you suggested.

Many thanks.
If you want to turn off a jammed computer hold in the power switch until it turns off (well that's what you do to a Packard Bell)
