I can understand the "extreme" bit but, like others I still struggle to se the relevance of "useful".

I think we'll have to accept that it's a rubbish clue - perhaps something like "Extremely radical footballer" would have been better

I think it's a very good clue. Something that is really useful, like a gadget, is called a "winger" in Cockney slang (at least according to my dictionary!)
