As committed and practising members of a church, we are outraged by the answer to this question.

I am curious as have not got the paper , and do not know the question let alone the answer. But I understand if you do not wish to share it.

The question is: Interjection expressing amazement or horror (5,4)
Answer: Jesus wept

I see yes i just found it over in crosswords and I don`t care for the expression used in that way but sadly it has come to be used thus.
Disappointing but the way language evolves.

Oh come off it Gasbaggertie - I have been a Christian all my life and do not feel offended - in fact rather nice to be reminded, in this atheistic world, that Jeses was capable of weeping.. I always rember this (JESUS WEPT) as being the shortest verse in our Bible and surely no more harmful than saying crickey! (derived from Christ's bones I believe)

Mamy the question was Interjection expressing amazement or horror (5,4) JESUS WEPT

I'm guessing that you believe that Jeses was God incarnate and am surprised that you could imagine that God could weep - I certainly believe that Jesus, as the Son of God could weep especially seeing the lack of belief all around Him - imagine His grief today !
If you feel that strongly about it Gasbaggertie, you should take it up with the compiler of the crossword.
Perhaps Gasbaggertie would like to explain why he was so outraged. I am a Christian but fail to see what was offensive about this.

I agree with you
When a person uses this interjection, it is blasphemous - it takes the name of Jesus in vain. The Telegraph would have been better not to have used a phrase that, by its very use, is anti-Christian.
I also am a Christian and was unhappy that this phrase was used. It may be spoken by some folks, but is distasteful in that it trivialised the grief felt by my Lord.
Jesus did not weep from amazement, He wept from compassion so the answer to the clue is a misquote. I found the presence of that clue offensive in the same way that members of other faiths have found misquotes or inappropriate use of words offensive. Why can't we respect other peoples views?
i'm an atheist but i also object strongly.
I do respect other people's views. We all know what this phrase means in the Bible. Unfortunately it has also come into being to mean something else for which the meaning is in dictionaries. It was given as a crossword clue. I am sure the compiler did not mean to offend anyone. I personally would never use that phrase as the crossword did so will not be concerned about it.
