Looks like either spelling is right, Telegraph yet again poses us all with a dilemma over spelling. Yet, Telegraph crosswords have been having more than one possibility on not just spelling recently. Have contacted the Telegraph on this matter yet they have not replied surprisingly. Good luck kenbraham. Warm wishes, on a sunny day, Bea :-)

Actually, I think it is kalends - or it was when I studied Latin in the 1960s !
According to Chambers dictionary either of the two spellings is acceptable for both words.

Many thanks also to Beatrice35. Certainly Chambers gives "ashlar" and "calends" as first choice with the other spelligs as alternatives. If the DT were to say which dictionary they work to it would help. Hope you get an answer eventually. I will be watching this space.
