I'm guessing at sturgeon - the roe is used to make caviar.
Think you're right there andy.

Lemar,

I am assuming the the sage Mr Hughes is correct as the only other fish with roe which is regularly eaten are Lumpfish and Cod and neither are what one would term a delicacy.

A herring is a small, sea fish that lives in schools of several thousand.  A sturgeon is a bony-plated fish which lives in freshwater and can live for over a hundred years and reach sizes in excess of six foot and several hundred pounds.

You could hardly call a sturgeon "herring-like", as Rekstout says; likewise lumpfish.

How about shad?  Herring family, and I think you can eat the roe.

I would go for Shad as well.

It belongs to the herring family, and though known in UK rivers its roe is more of a delicacy in the United States.

This question was asked in this week's Daily Mail general knowledge crossword.  The known letters are S_A_ so I guess that the answer must be SHAD.
