Could it possibly be NECK 'K' being one end of Knot ? This is only a suggestion, remember.

Looks like 'Nurr' - 'run' (head, back) + (love)r

An alt sp of 'Knur', a knot on a tree
I don't wish to argue with Lie-in King, but Nurl looks more likely RUN (backwards) + L(overs)

Thanks for the link, pbeach - I see there's an extra element to this puzzle where the 'L' becomes required, so no arguments are necessary!..

...Too hot anyway... :-)
Lie-in King, actually the link is an old crossword, not 7051, however it does point to the fact that
NUR = Two definitions: NUR (a hard ball or knot of wood); NURL (bead)
That'll teach me to pay attention! :-)

In that case, I still prefer 'Nurr' as a knot - no bead in the clue? Unless we think of 'bead' as 'head'? 'Run' for 'head' is bad enough...

Air, I need air...
It would help if the clue was given correctly.

There is no "one" in the clue - it reads:-

Head back to hold end of lover's knot (4).
Rollo, thanks for that NURR it must be.

Oo, infamy... sorry about that.

It's Nurr for me - but a poor clue if you ask me.

Thanks all.
