9 Down Being unable to go, secretary expressing disgust in Cape Town. (8) It is either stenosis or stenoses as both mean constipation and steno is the secretary but I do not know the word for disgust in Afrikaan?

Thanks Kayak I should have known that you would know. Sis not in Chambers only short for sister. Could have looked on the web I suppose. Will do now, is it in Wikipedia?

1.) A South African English expression roughly equivalent to the American "yech" and the Afrikaans expression "sies".


Sis (disgust, contempt) is in both Chambers Ninth Edition and the CD-Rom version.

Having lived in SA for a few years I recall the word with some fondness as it was very expressive.

As the cover of my Chambers is falling off with use it is probably version 2! Time for a new buy I think. Thanks guys The think the word that sums up my situation is Sis!
