Hope that getting on the Visually Impaired Register will help you in some way. A chum of mine has recently been registered as partially sighted (that's what she called it, so don't know if that's the same) and she was pleasantly surprised to get free rail travel, access to talking books and some stuff for her computer....not really sure what. In no way compensates for loss of sight, but at least it's something.
As you say, we just have to take what life throws at us, good and bad.
