Mysterious fruit tree

What is this fruit tree growing wild in a hedgerow here (Cambridge).? It's a small, shrubby, tree with greyish bark. It has some thorns. The leaves are oval, lightly serrated, about 4cm long and 2cm wide. It is fruiting now.The fruits hang down. They are yellow, slightly orangeish, in colour, oval, 3cm long by 2.5 cm wide.They are distinctly plum like and are edible (I hope, because I and the dog have eaten them, the dog reaching up to pick her own!). They taste quite like plums. I've never noticed it in fruit before, though it's on my driveway, so it may be an erratic fruiter

Hi Fred. It could very well be a plum tree or similar that has grown from a pip (stone), dropped there by a blackbird.

From what I've seen these selfgrown fruit trees are not as good as the purpose specimen available from the garden centres. It all depends where the pollen comes from that fertilised the flower.

Sorry if this is being pedantic - but, don't you mean self-seeded rather than self-grown?
