EV 874 Arthur
30 Answers
Hello EV N&C Wine Clubbers,
Had a struggle getting into this one. Not many gift clues. But once the clashes were becoming apparent, they could be used to good effect. A good feeling on completing this EV. soon be time for a preprandial while cooking the dinner.
Chrisiana, this might help, if you need Brewers while away from home,

It isn't as good the actual book, EV 871 is appropriate!

Will be settling down to look at this week's offering in a few minutes.
Are you going anywhere near where I usually am, Copelander? (Eastern Algarve). If so they are certainly warmer climes at the moment. My friends are all sweltering in the heat - great for a holiday but not for every day routine work etc.

Hello Copelander and Christiana,
Hope you have a good holiday Copelander, where are you going? I am researching possibilities for us for Novemberish. Taba Heights is looking promising, as Herself isn't too keen on long haul flights, unless we travel First Class. Cough!
Christiana, the reason I gave the Brewers link was because I picked up your post to last weeks thread. As far as ODQ is concerned I tend to Google or Yahoo search with appropriate words in parenthesis. Normally works.
We are hopefully off to visit friends next week, in the frozen North, well, actually near Burton-on-Trent, so might sample a few Marstons! So I'll be away from home from thursday till late monday, so please accept apologies for absence for EV 874.
Herself is hobbling around with the help of a walking stick on a tubi-gripped foot. I think she has broken a metatarsus. The fracture clinic should dress it so she is a bit more mobile.
At one stage Copelander I was looking at the clashes and thinking another sporting theme, how was that! Thank goodness it wasn't.

We're going to Southern Italy - Puglia and Calabria. We've been to both areas before and love the food, the people and of course the vino.. Also an opportunity parlare Italiano. Regards to Mrs HH, Doc....she'll be very uncomfortable for aweek or two, and certainly won't be doing any driving. I too thought of a very topical, sporting theme for EV.( in fact it's on TV in the background as I write.)
Copelander, enjoy Italy. Slap on the factor!
Herself certainly will not be doing any driving, she doesn't even have a licence! She decided not to continue with driving lessons after her father shouted at her during the first driving lesson,, all she had done was to try and drive the family car up a tree! How unreasonable can a parent be! She hasn't asked me to teach her to drive either, despite the fact I would be more relaxed. In all honesty she doesn't need to drive whilst mainly resident in the Metropolis.
Enjoy your holiday, Ciao ciao.

Hello all - after the speed finishing of last week, took one look at the perp and shot off to prune the redcurrants. Haven't a clue what/who Art is and if I have read copelander correctly, what he/it has to do with sticks and little white balls?! No haven't been to Sketch - London is next week. Will try to fit it in but the Regennt St/Piccadilly day we are lunching at the RA, still hoping for some suggestions for nearer to Marylebone for the evening.
Poor Herself, do hope the foot heals quickly - Ruta Grav very good for healing fractures. Of course she should travel 1st for long haul, don't be so tight-fisted Doc.
That's it for now, am off to linseed oil the main gate, [poor thing has been sadly neglected recently and as I have been cracking the whip re-tarting the place up (all matching doors in our yard now, only the bottom, middle and back yards for them to do now) and getting all doors, windows and gates one colour, I had better do my bit!
Regards to all

Hello Devadolly,
I suspect that copelander, like me wasn't thinking of the game you imply, more blocks of wood that need what you are putting on the main gate and larger red balls, and three sticks that support two smaller sticks! But we were both wrong.
I noticed that it was your nemesis that composed this weeks EV!

Hi Doc - oh what a pity, I would have enjoyed the OTHER game. The bit of the gate that has been done looks lovely, only in to check the weather (for the 14th time today) Himself is getting in an awful tizzy as he has 30 acres shouting to be cut for big bales and he wants the pasture for the sheep - his spring work begins this month with tupping time. Trouble is, we need at least 3 days for the best quality we sell to the horse owners! I'm staying well clear!
Devadolly, Terry Wogan tells us in the Sunday Telegraph this week that the best way of finding out about the weather is to look out of the window! So perhaps Himself should just go for it! BTW it has been glorious here today and also for the past few days, tried to wear out a garden chair.
As for 1st Class, no problem, just that it also starts off with use of the Executive Lounge! My fault for introducing her to the delights of both after my work travel! Still at least the drinks are free!!
Herself went to the hobble-in clinic this morning, no further strapping, just the tubi-grip and a note for a week off work, and if she feels she cannot get to work after that, to get another certificate from her GP.
How much of EV have you done, or has it gone over the shoulder at the sight of Mr O! I think you should COMPOSE yourself in respect of Arthur! Then you will have a feeling of LOVELINESS.
If we don't speak again before thursday, have a lovely time in the Metropolis.

Hi Everyone
Have finished this week's offering - I love the link between the five letter word and the title - but am a bit baffled by a couple of clues. Can anyone explain the answer to 14a as the word I have is not defined, and also the cryptic part of 26d.
On the domestic front elbow is healing but still on antibiotics and therefore on the wagon . Daughter away all week at a Scout / Guide camp in Windsor - bet they have better weather than here - and son off to Italy with Scout network. Himself at work so peace and quiet ah - Arthur (so to speak)
DocHH - I think you are very noble to be taxiing - I will be doing the same for about 6 months whilst himself is weaned off tablets. Perhaps we should form a TDC (taxi drivers' corner) lol!!

Yes, all very well DocHH, we do look out of the window, all is well with cut grass for the first 24 hours, rain, hail whatever. But, as soon as the grass begins to dry internally it must be kept dry at all costs or it becomes dusty and cannot be used for horses or calves as it gives them respitary problems - tell him Physicsgirl! So bragging about your wonderful weather in the south does nothing to stop the sleepless nights in this area of the world where we are renowned for our high quality haylage when we can't get two days together without a downpour. Thank you for the clue - I assume we are talking the Savoy group? If we are might have another look!
Ringer Ruta might help you too, or Rhus Tox if it is a muscular strain, hope it improves soon.
Where are Novalis & Physicsgirl - hope they are just oon their hols!
PS Burton on Trent is the Midlands not the North and it is the Metropolis next week for us.

Hello ringer,
Pleased tohear the Spanish archer (El Bow) is on the mend. It must be quiet with all the squids away, cannot decide if you are enjoying that or missing their presence!
14ac is an anagram of one of the 5 clues that give hint to transforming the other entries. It is an anagram of the first 3 words, then minus another letter and re-anagramed. Resulting in a post mortem word more familiar to our across the pond friends.
I struggled on 26d, but Chambers, even my 2003 version revealed it! Empty=BARE, Barrels=B and what is the back of cellar! I need to see mine soon!
I have absolutely no problem with taxi-ing Herself, it goes with my "job-description"!
Devadolly, ringer has dropped yet another heavy hint, as I have done at least twice in respect of Arthur! I don't think you could have failed to NOTED them!

Ty DocHH - am happy with my answers. I do wish though that you wouldn't rub in the weather differences. Devadolly - I can empathise with your problem. Sun was shining here this afternoon and I did think about sitting out - when it started spitting with rain. Don't get too hung up on Arthur - when you've got a few answers try pencilling them in and the problem becomes evident, not as weighty as it first appears.
Happy hols copelander, and good news about sons job!
Ringer, please be assured I am not gloating about the weather down here on Costa Del Geriatrica, just keeping my friends informed.
Sorry, Devadolly, but my knowledge of Arthur, other than what I found on the web and in an Encyclopaedia I have is to say at best pathetic. But apparently at one stage he was "Master of the Queens Musick" and apparently wrote a colourful symphony. Cryptically there was even a precursor to the famous "Chess" musical attributed to him my "plaid friend"!
Burton-on-Trent is at least 200 miles north of here, so it is in the frozen north as far as we are concerned.
Have to admit I think Novalis has deserted us, and I am feeling rather lonely as the token male!

Dont worrry about it DocHH - you dont come across as like a token anything.
The weather here on the Isle of Man is truly appalling today, rain, wind, storms, cold. Its the first time Ive wished myself back on the Algarve. The two huge Norwegian Forest cats I am caring for in their owners absence have thick inpenetrable coats, so they keep going out and coming back in a few minutes later soaking wet and trailing leaves everywhere - ugh.
Am making progress slowly. Cant blame it all on my current lack of resources, dont really seem on this setters wave length. Sort of cottoned on fairly early to all the twiddly nigmaticbits, just struggling with a few of the basic cryptic clues.
Hope you have a wonderful holiday, Copelander and that all is safely gathered in soon Devadollyl.

Hello all - Christina, we had quite a decent day yesterday until late pm and then you blew it all across to us! We have hopes for mowing tomorrow, if they start early should have 20-30 acres dropped by the end of the day and with all fingers & toes well & truly x'd baled on Friday.
North Doc? What about Manchester, the Lake District and Scotland? How very xenophobic!
As to Mr O had a look and am not on his wavelength at all, having great difficulty with getting the clues and if it is the Arfer I am thinking of I am leaning towards his orchestral works rather than needing a choir, but alas, it is not telling me much.
Well done your son copelander, enjot your hols.
