On the opening credits for birds of a feather they show CINE film of two young girls. I have heard that this is actual film of Pauline Quirk and Linda Robson when they were children. If this is correct, can you assume that they were childhood friends.

No and yes. No, the film is not of Pauline Quirk and Linda Robson when they were children, it is two little girls with the same colouring as the actresses, and the film was treated to make it look like old cine film, it was fact shot specially for the series credits. That said, Pauline and Linda have been friends since childhood, although if there is any cine film of them at that age, it may not have been suitable to use, hence to shooting of a new segment of film, with children who looked something like the actresses would have done at that age.
