Hello ChatterBankers, I'd be interested in hearing your opinions on this. I'm a Swede living in Sweden. The other day a Brit named James Savage, managing editor of The Local (a site with Sweden's news written in English) appeared in a radio interview over here to explain what ASBOs are - we don't hav'em here. While I would love the opportunity to have one issued for the people having barbies right under my window >:-< I must say I was puzzled by the whole concept. Seems like a dangerous path to me. What are your opinions? I should say I'm not here to debate the matter, I'm just interested in the pros and cons as you see them.

Well some ASBO's must be effective and do the job they were designed for. Unfortunately the media only reports on the ones which are breached.

I'm listening, please go on.
We don't have them in NZ.

Well if the ASBO does work i.e. keep the person away from the area in which they are causing problems, all well and good, as it is providing an alternative to a custodial sentence. Unfortunately, in many cases, it just shifts the problem to a different location.
Question Author
Yeah... I think I would too.
Question Author
Sorry craft, the I would too was about the badge of honour.
They dish them for all sorts of anti social behaviour

Waste of taxpaxers money .
If some yob was lippy or threatening to me he'd get a swift mouthful but I would probably be the one who ended up with Asbo because you musn't say anything to the poor little darlings .
The law in this country needs a radical overhaul .
You can tell I am grumpy today :))

.
I got one.....my dog, named Asbo - cool ;)
Why, swede?

He he Shaney grump away all you like.

MWB I've never broken the law and I intend to keep it that way, but the whole concept seems utterly unfair to me. I believe in ONE law and I'd rather be punished according to that one law than being treated like some other kind of citizen than the rest of the population. You become what you are treated as so I think in order to maintain my sense of self I'd try to wear it... with honour.
swede...why would you wear an ASBO ( a badge of insolence) as a badge of honour?

Shaney...absolutely correct.
Question Author
Simple indeed DaLegend

Sqad ^^
You become what you are treated?

They brought it upon themselves, swede!

If it wasn't for the asbos, they'd get some other punishment, juvie, jail, etc.
asbos dont work at all. kids love getting them gives them more "street cred" they need punishing for there behaviour not told they cant go in a certain area. as most kids you tell them they cant do and they will do it.
sweedheart......well you have answered your own comment that you don't have them in Sweden, presumably because there are more people with your attitude in your country.
Oh I quite agree Legend on the bad parenting front . Some couldn't care less what their kids are up to .
Although I don't agree with smacking children .I had never had to smack to get my point across and mine have turned out OK :)
