27 down: Paul or Pall. Paul is a saint but Pall is a shroud (I hate these double meaning answers).
17d area yes, (anagram of a ear = hearing aid)
Area ...remove hiding from hearing aid & anagram

27 As it sounds like the saint, the answer should be the shroud
27d PALL . . . . not Paul, only sounds like Paul

The definition (should) always appear at the very beginning or end of the clue.
So here, shroud has to be the definition.
